Spring Maintenance

5 Tips for Homeowners

1. Shut Down the Pilot Light (Save on Utilities)

Many homeowners don't realize they can save money by turning off the standing pilot during the warmer months.

The Tip: If you aren't using your fireplace for the next few months, turn the gas valve to "Off". This reduces heat output (keeping your home cooler) and prevents unnecessary wear on the thermopile and thermocouple.

2. The "White Film" Warning

Have you noticed a cloudy, white film on the inside of your glass? That's caused by combustion byproducts and minerals in the gas.

The Tip: If left all summer, the heat can "bake" that film into the glass, making it permanent. Spring is the best time to have the glass professionally cleaned with a specialized cream cleaner. (never use Windex or ammonia-based cleaners!).

3. Inspect the Exterior Vent

Spring is Prime nesting season for birds and squirrels.

The Tip: Take a walk outside and check your exterior vent cap. Ensure there are no bird nests, beehives, or overgrown spring bushes obstructing the airflow. A blocked Vent is a major a major safety hazard.

4. Battery Refresh

Most modern units have a battery backup for the sparker or the remote receiver.

The Tip: Treat your fireplace like your smoke detectors. Change the batteries in the spring to prevent them from leaking acid and damaging the electronics over the humid months.

5. Dusting the "Guts"

Even if the fireplace isn't running, the blower fan is a magnet for pet hair and dust bunnies.

The Tip: Use a soft paintbrush or  vacuum with a brush attatchment to gently clean the bottom Louvers and the control compartment. A clean blower runs quieter and lasts longer.

Why Book a "Spring Tune-Up"?

* Avoid the Fall Rush: Don't wait until the first 40 degree night to find out your piot won't light. Beat the September scramble by booking now.

* Identify Humidity Issues: In the Northeast, summer humidity can cause minor corrosion inside fireboxes. A spring service includes a protective check to ensure your unit stays pristine.

*Flexible Scheduling: Our spring calendar has more flexibility, meaning we can get to you faster and at a time that fits your schedule.
